From Cattle to Crude & Silky Sullivan too: Our Legacy

CalPlus Capital was formed by the descendants of Philip A. Klipstein, a Virginia-born cattleman who settled in Bakersfield, CA in the late 1800s. Over time, our family became one of the region’s largest landowners, holding ranches, grazing leases, and mineral rights across Kern County and Santa Barbara.

Our grandfather, Philip A. Klipstein, also raised thoroughbreds, including the legendary Silky Sullivan, known for his dramatic come-from-behind wins and his run in the 1958 Kentucky Derby. Silky remains a fan-favorite to this day.

CalPlus Capital was created to simplify communication and ensure that oil companies, operators, and land professionals have one consistent place to send leases and royalty payments. With four siblings, multiple moves, and name changes — this structure brings clarity and continuity to managing our family’s mineral legacy.

OUR HISTORY: SILKY SULLIVAN

Silky Sullivan: The Comeback King

Bred and raised by the Klipstein family, Silky Sullivan earned fame as one of the most exciting racehorses in California history. Known for his nearly impossible come-from-behind victories, Silky became a symbol of heart, determination, and style.

He won the Santa Anita Derby, ran in the Kentucky Derby, and remains a beloved icon with race fans. Silky is buried at Golden Gate Fields, and we are proud to continue honoring his name as part of our family story and business.
